Relic: Rogue Trader Playing Peice

Here are the steps I took when painting this playing piece from 'Wizkids' version of the board game "Relic". If you like the look of this bust, it is available with the specific edition available here: https://amzn.to/3paDgCQ Please be aware that the 'Fantasy Flight' version has different resin busts/playing pieces.

Red Cloth

  1. Basecoat with Khorne Red .
  2. Add shading gwith a 1:1 mix of Khorne Red and Abaddon Black .
  3. Apply chunky highlights of Evil Sunz Scarlet .
  4. Now do fine highlights of Wild Rider Red .
  5. Selectively highligh edges and curves with small amount sof Squig Orange and Tau Light Ochre , mixed 1:1.
  6. Finish the cloth with dots of Ungor Flesh on upwars facing points and corners that would catch the light.;

Brown Material

  1. Basecoat with Steel Legion Drab .
  2. Wash with Agrax Earthshade .
  3. Apply chunky highlights of Baneblade Brown .
  4. Now add smaller highlights of Karak Stone .
  5. Mix a little White Scar into your Karak Stone , for the final selective highlight.

Dark Leather

  1. Basecoat with Rhinox Hide .
  2. Add chunky highlights of Doombull Brown .
  3. Make smaller highlights with XV-88 .
  4. Finish with very small highlights of Screaming Skull .

Gold Material

  1. Basecoat with a 1:1 mix of Liberator Gold and Stormhost Silver .
  2. Wash with Agrax Earthshade .
  3. Re-establish the basecolour of 1:1 mix of Liberator Gold and Stormhost Silver , where needed.
  4. Add edge highlights of pure Stormhost Silver or Vallejo Model Air Silver RLM01 Metallic , where light would hit the most.

Skin

  1. Basecoat with Cadian Fleshtone .
  2. Wash with Reikland Fleshshade .
  3. Mix the Cadian Fleshtone 2:1 with Wraithbone and add general highlights.
  4. Increase the amount of Wraithbone gradually, highlighting smaller and smaller.
  5. Finish off with selective dots of Wraithbone where needed.

Decorative Gold

  1. Basecoat with Retributor Armour .
    Shade: Gor-grunta Fur
    Deep shade: Recesses with Doombull Brown + Black 2:1
    Highlight: Stormhost Silver
  2. Wash with Reikland Fleshshade .
  3. Enhance recesses with thinned Rhinox Hide or a 1:1 mix of Doombull Brown and Abaddon Black where needed.
  4. Gradually mix Stormhost Silver or Vallejo Model Air Silver RLM01 Metallic , into your Retributor Armour . Now, gradually, highlight smaller and smaller until you are finishing with dots of pure silver.

Black Hair

  1. Basecoat with Abaddon Black . Black
    Highlight: Kantor Blue and Black 1:1
    Highlight: Thousand Sons Blue & Sybarite 2:1
    Highlight: Fenrisian Grey
  2. Mix Kantor Blue and Abaddon Black 1:1 and edge highlight each hair.
  3. With a 2:1 mix of Thousand Sons Blue and Sybarite Green , add selective highlights on upward facing strands of hair, at a 45 degree angle. This is in an attempt to emulate a halo of light, that would can often see in professional photography.
  4. Enhance the previous stage with smaller highlights of Fenrisian Grey .

Black Tubing

  1. Basecoat with Abaddon Black .
  2. Apply chunky edge highlights of Incubi Darkness .
  3. Add fine highlights of Incubi Darkness mixed 1:1 with Deepkin Flesh .
  4. Finish with selective highlights of Deepkin Flesh .

Black Leather

  1. Basecoat with Abaddon Black .
  2. Apply chunky highlights of 1:1 Abaddon Black and Eshin Grey .
  3. Add smaller highlights of Dawnstone .
  4. Finish with selective highlights of Administratum Grey .

Green Lens

  1. Basecoat with Caliban Green .
  2. Paint the lower left portion with a layer of Warpstone Glow , leaving enough room for reducing its size 2 or 3 more times.
  3. Paint a smaller area with Moot Green .
  4. Add some Ice Yellow to your Moot Green and paint an even smaller patch, working further into the bottom left.

Red Gems

  1. Basecoat with Khorne Red .
  2. Paint the lower left portion with a layer of Evil Sunz Scarlet , leaving enough room for reducing its size 2 or 3 more times.
  3. Paint a smaller area with Wild Rider Red .
  4. Add some Ice Yellow to your Wild Rider Red and paint an even smaller patch, working further into the bottom left.
  5. If you have enough room, paint an even smaller patch with pure Ice Yellow .
