I based the colour scheme for this miniature on the art for the card. You may recognise it from issue #90 of White Dwarf. It is a pretty important piece to me, so wanted to show it some love.
Dark Skin
- Basecoat with 3:1 Gorthor Brown and Wild Rider Red .
- Add general shading with some thin Doombull Brown .
- Enhance the shading in deep parts and in eye sockets with 1:1 Doombull Brown and a little Black .
- Mix a little Ushabti Bone into your basecoat mix, then apply highlights. Repeat this step, as many times as needed, adding more Ushabti Bone to the mix and highlighting more selectively.
- Finish with a few specular highlights of pure Ushabti Bone , where needed.
White Beard
- Basecoat with 1:2 Corax White and White .
- Wash with some very thin 2:1 Rakarth Flesh and Grey Seer .
- Shade selectively with an equal parts mix of Stormvermin Fur and Gorthor Brown .
- Overbrush with White , picking out raised details. I did this a couple of times, being more selective with the second pass.
Cloth
- Basecoat with Doombull Brown .
- Add some general shading with thin Khorne Red .
- Highlight with 1:1 Doombull Brown and Zamesi Desert .
- Now highlight more selectively with Zamesi Desert .
- Mix some White into your Zamesi Desert and add very small/specular highlights.
Dark Leather
- Basecoat with 1:1 Dryad Bark and Black .
- Shade with Black . Just shade recesses and try to make the lines thin.
- Highlight with Dryad Bark .
- Add fine highlights of Stormvermin Fur .
- Selectively highlight with 1:1 Stormvermin Fur and Deepkin Flesh .
- Finish with specular highlights of Deepkin Flesh .
Dark Brown Leather
- Basecoat with Rhinox Hide .
- Glaze Mournfang Brown towards edges.
- Add chunky highlights of Skrag Brown .
- Mix the Skrag Brown 1:1 with Ushabti Bone , then apply fine highlights to edges.
- Selectively highlight with Ushabti Bone .
- Add some White to your Ushabti Bone and finish the leather with some very small/specular highlights on corners.
Wood
- Basecoat with Thondia Brown .
- Shade with Rhinox Hide .
- Mix Thondia Brown 2:1 with Steel Legion Drab , then add chunky highlights to the wood.
- Mix some Administratum Grey into the above paint, then highlight more selectively.
- Add more Administratum Grey to the mix and add some final small highlights.
Gold
- Basecoat with Retributor Armour .
- Wash with Reikland Fleshshade .
- Mix a little Silver RLM01 Metallic into your Retributor Armour , then add general highlights and highlights to all hard edges.
- Increase the amount of Silver RLM01 Metallic in the mix, so it is a very pale gold. Now selectively highlight.
- Finish with specular highlights of Silver RLM01 Metallic .
Steel
- Basecoat with Leadbelcher .
- Wash with Nuln Oil . I also glazed some Agrax Earthshade over the filigree to make it look dirtier.
- Highlight with Ironbreaker .
- Add edge highlights with Silver RLM01 Metallic .
For the chainmail, I used the same silver paints, but simply applied them as overbrushing to the raised details, after a Black basecoat.
