Here is how I painted Toyotomi Hideyoshi from the excellent "Daimyos" set from Warlord Games. These miniatures have been designed for the Pike & Shotte gaming system, but could be used in a variety of games.
Skin
- Basecoat with 2:1 Cadian Fleshtone and Mournfang Brown .
- Increase the amount of Mournfang Brown in the above mix and shade the skin.
- Mix the base colour 2:1 with Ushabti Bone and add chunky highlights.
- Increase the amount of Ushabti Bone in the above mix, so it is about 1:2 now. use this for finer highlights.
- Mix in a little White and selectively highlight.
- Increase the amount of White in the mix, until it is a subtle off-white. Now pick out a few specular highlights.
Red Cloth
- Basecoat with Mephiston Red .
- Shade with a thin 1:1 mix of Mephiston Red and Incubi Darkness .
- Add chunky highlights with 1:1 Mephiston Red and Wild Rider Red .
- Now apply fine highlights of Wild Rider Red .
- Selectively highlight with Fire Dragon Bright .
- Finish with a few very small highlights of Fire Dragon Bright , with a little White mixed in.
White Lining
- Basecoat with 1:1 Celestra Grey and White .
- Mix the base colour 1:1 with Dark Reaper and shade the white cloth.
- Further define the recesses with shading of pure Dark Reaper .
- Mix some of the initial base colour 1:1 with White and highlight.
- More selectively highlight with pure White .
Green Cloth
- Basecoat with Stegadon Scale Green .
- Shade with a mix of Stegadon Scale Green and Abaddon Black . Keep thin thin and run it into folds and recesses.
- Apply chunky highlights with 1:1 Stegadon Scale Green and Kabalite Green .
- Now fine highlight the folds with Kabalite Green .
- Mix your Kabalite Green 1:1 with Blue Horror and selectively highlight.
- Finish with a few small dots of Blue Horror .
Blue Cloth
- Basecoat with Kantor Blue .
- Shade with a thin mix of 1:1 Kantor Blue and Black .
- Highlight with 1:1 Kantor Blue and Teclis Blue .
- Add some Blue Horror into the above mix and more selectively highlight.
Black Armour & Hooves
- Basecoat with Black .
- Apply chunky highlights of Dark Reaper .
- Add fine edge highlights of Thunderhawk Blue .
- Selectively highlight with Fenrisian Grey .
- Carefully apply very small highlights of Blue Horror .
- On points and upward facing edges that you want to "glint", finish with specular White highlights.
Purple Details
- Basecoat with 2:1 Xereus Purple and Screamer Pink .
- Overbrush with Screamer Pink , to pick out raised details.
- Carefully highlight with 1:1 Screamer Pink and Screaming Skull .
- Add a fewe specular highlights of Screaming Skull . Try to concentrate these towards the centre of the stitching to enhance the shape.
It is very easy to overdo the highlights on these details, If the highlights have washed out the area, feel free to glaze it with Fluorescent Violet or similar. Then re-highlight with the last stage, if needed.
Gunbai Wood
- Basecoat with Thondia Brown .
- Shade with some thinned Rhinox Hide .
- Mix the Thondia Brown 1:1 with Steel Legion Drab , then highlights.
- Now mix the above colour with an equal amount of Administratum Grey and selectively highlight.
- Finish with very small/specular highlights of Administratum Grey .
Horse
- Basecoat with 2:1 Black and Dryad Bark . Make sure you basecoat the tail too.
- Shade with thin lines of Black .
- Add chunky highlights of Dryad Bark , to help define the shape of the skin.
- Mix the Dryad Bark 1:1 with Baneblade Brown and add in fine highlights, within the previous stage.
- Selectively highlight with pure Baneblade Brown .
- Mix some Ushabti Bone into your Baneblade Brown , then finish with some very small highlights.
Use these same colours to highlight the tail. As it is so textured you can go a lot heavier with the highlights.
Low Horse Legs
- Basecoat with an equal parts mix of Ushabti Bone , White and Rakarth Flesh
- Shade recesses with Baneblade Brown
- Add a little Dryad Bark to your Baneblade Brown and further define the deepest parts of the recesses, where needed.
- Mix the base colour 1:1 with White and add highlights.
- Finish with small highlights of pure White .
Gold
- Basecoat with Retributor Armour .
- Wash and shade using a 1:1 mix of Gore-grunta Fur and Contrast Medium . I applied this as an all over wash on the "scales" of the horses armour, and shaded the flatter, more open panels carefully.
- Enhance the shading with a 1:1 mix of Doombull Brown and Black . I would recommend keeping your paint thin and running it into recesses carefully.
- Mix a little Silver RLM01 Metallic into your Retributor Armour then highlight. I mixed it roulghly 1:2 to keep the ruckness of the gold.
- Finish with selective highlights of Silver RLM01 Metallic .
Sandals
- Here I basecoated the tabi socks with Rakarth Flesh and the straps with Rhinox Hide .
- I highlighted the socks by adding increasing amounts of ;white into the Rakarth Flesh , until I finished with a specular White highlight.
- On the straps, I highlighted with Steel Legion Drab , then mixed some Screaming Skull into is for final selective highlights.
