Quick and easy base perfect for a red planet/Mars theme. Actual paints don't matter too much, as long as they're red and grey, as it's the pigments that do all the work!

  1. Base with sand mixture of different sizes
  2. Prime in black however you like. I currently use the Matt Black spray paint from Halfords
  3. Basecoat sand with Scarlet Red and rocks with Mechanicus Standard Grey
  4. Drybrush/stipple sand with Scarlet Blood and rocks with Administratum Grey
  5. Drybrush/stipple sand with Orange Fire
  6. Apply Vallejo pigments Dark Red Ochre and Brown Iron Oxide with an old, worn brush and work them into the base
  7. Tidy the rim with Black and you're done!

You can fix the pigments in place using a pigment binder, alcohol or mineral/white spirit but this can diminish the dusty appearance so I choose not to.
