A selection of horse coat and hair colours, that I have been happy with on my models. These can be used in a variety of settings and time-periods.

Brown Horse

  1. Basecoat with Rhinox Hide .
  2. Drybrush exposed areas with Mournfang Brown . I would recommend using a small brush and take the direction of the light into consideration. This stage is to act as a main highlight and add a little texture. Feel free to use a brush to pick out highlights on hard to reach parts.
  3. Apply fine highlight to edges and curves using Skrag Brown .
  4. Mix your Skrag Brown 1:1 with Ushabti Bone and highlight more selectively.
  5. Finally, mix some Ivory into the paint above and add a few specular/very small highlights.

Brown Tail

  1. Basecoat with Rhinox Hide .
  2. Drybrush all over with Thondia Brown .
  3. Repeat, but try to bring out upward facing curves with more selective drybrushing with Gorthor Brown .
  4. Pick out edges from the previous step with selective Baneblade Brown edge highlights.

Black Horse

  1. Basecoat with Black .
  2. Drybrush exposed areas with Skavenblight Dinge . I would recommend using a small brush and take the direction of the light into consideration. This stage is to act as a main highlight and add a little texture. Feel free to use a brush to pick out highlights on hard to reach parts.
  3. Selectively highlight edges and curved portions where the light mould hit using Stormvermin Fur .
  4. Mix a little Ivory (or another warm off-white) into your Stormvermin Fur and highlight more selectively.

Black Tail

  1. Basecoat with Black .
  2. Drybrush with Skavenblight Dinge .
  3. Selectively pick out upward facing curves with Stormvermin Fur .
  4. Mix a little Ivory into your Stormvermin Fur and add a few smaller highlights to accentuate the previous steps.

Black 2

  1. Basecoat with 2:1 Black and Dryad Bark . Make sure you basecoat the tail too.
  2. Shade with thin lines of Black .
  3. Add chunky highlights of Dryad Bark , to help define the shape of the skin.
  4. Mix the Dryad Bark 1:1 with Baneblade Brown and add in fine highlights, within the previous stage.
  5. Selectively highlight with pure Baneblade Brown .
  6. Mix some Ushabti Bone into your Baneblade Brown , then finish with some very small highlights.
  7. Use these same colours to highlight the tail. As it is so textured you can go a lot heavier with the highlights.

Lower Horse Legs

  1. Basecoat with an equal parts mix of Ushabti Bone , White and Rakarth Flesh .
  2. Shade recesses with Baneblade Brown .
  3. Add a little Dryad Bark to your Baneblade Brown and further define the deepest parts of the recesses, where needed.
  4. Mix the base colour 1:1 with White and add highlights.
  5. Finish with small highlights of pure White .
