I love Sky Raiders color scheme and wanted to recreate it but with a look that's a bit darker, dirtier, battle-worn. My main inspiration was a tutorial by Cult of Paint ("How to Paint CORSAIR VOIDSCARRED | AELDARI | SKY RAIDERS"). But I don't have an aerograph, and struggled to find a paint that will look similar to the original Sky Raiders color scheme and the on created by Cult of Paint's with several paints. Finally, after a long search, I chose Vallejo Xpress Space Grey and several Citadel paints.

Priming

  1. Basecoat the whole model The Fang
  2. Zenithal basecoat Grey Seer

I did zenithal with Grey Seer over the Fang but Space Grey Xpress paint is so opaque it's hard to see zenithal.

Armour

  1. Paint the whole armour Vallejo Xpress Space Grey
  2. Shade armour recessess and helmet's visor with Dark Reaper
  3. Paint off-black narrow, serpentine camouflage stripes with the 1:1 mix of Heavy Charcoal with Skavenblight Dinge . I painted about 1 stripe per armour section (eg. 1 on forearm, 1 on a thigh etc.).
  4. Paint helmet's optics with Grey Seer and then with Warp Lightning
  5. Highlight the armour with Fenrisian Grey
  6. Highlight camouflage stripes on edges with Thunderhawk Blue
  7. You can correct mistakes with Thunderhawk Blue (lighter recessess), mixes of The Fang , Russ Grey and Fenrisian Grey in darker and lighter sections of the armour.
  8. Paint the whole base Heavy Charcoal

Cloths, coat, tabbard, belts and pouches

  1. Paint the coat, cloth and tabbard Heavy Charcoal
  2. Highlight the coat, cloth and tabbard with Skavenblight Dinge
  3. Paint golden elements with Liberator Gold
  4. Paint the gun and sword's hilt Ionrach Skin
  5. Paint the blade Leadbelcher
  6. Shade everything above with Agrax Earthshade
  7. Leather belts and pouches Heavy Charcoal
  8. Highlight leather belts and pouches with Dark Reaper and than fine higlight not quite evenly, with lines and dots with Steel Legion Drab
  9. Paint the gems with Stormhost Silver and then with Warp Lightning
  10. Paint bands/ribbons with Warpstone Glow or Greenskin and then shade with Coelia Greenshade

Weathering armour

  1. Use a small cut sponge to do weathering on the edges and selected surfaces with Ulthuan Grey and then less with Dark Reaper (it looks especially good when you paint dark color inside a dot of light grey paint). Don't overdo it.
  2. Shade the lower part of legs and boots with one layer of Agrax Earthshade then another layer but just on feet, creating darker, dirty look.

The base

  1. Paint the whole base with Heavy Charcoal
  2. Paint external, visible parts with Leadbelcher
  3. Shade the whole base with Agrax Earthshade (I used it also to paint the black rim to add some dirty look)
  4. Use some brown paint diluted with water or Dirty Down Rust to create a layer of rust. Then you can paint some Troll Slayer Orange diluted with water to create rust of lighter color (I painted it mostly around bolts and in recessess).
  5. Drybrush metal edges with Leadbelcher
