I have stuck to covering the terrain pieces only in this guide. If you are interested in how I painted the individual miniatures, resource cache or the "Doom Pile", these will have their own guides available. How I approached painting the terrain and accessories included in this starter set.
Scaffolding Towers
- First, I primed the inside of the towers with Matt Black , then sprayed the outside using Hyrax Brown when they were dry. I sprayed pretty heavily at both points to ensure good coverage. A little of the Hyrax Brown will hit the Matt Black area, but this is fine and will add some very subtle variety in shade.
- Now paint over the outside with a layer of Rhinox Hide . I would recommend getting the tops and bottom edges of the planks too, leaving just the inside coverred in the Matt Black primer.
- Heavily drybrush with Mournfang Brown . The aim is to get a variety of shades on the flat planks, but leave the cracks in the initital dark brown. I would advise going heavier on edges, crners and where planks meet.
- Drybrush again with Karak Stone . On this pass, try to hit all of the hard edges, like a quick and dirty edge highlight. I would also recommend picking out the edges of the thick splits in the planks on the top.
- Drybrush lighting with Ushabti Bone . Use a small brush and just hit corners and areas that would catch the light more.
- Glaze the wood with 2:1 Lahmian Medium and Reikland Fleshshade . This step it optional, but it is to add some richness into the wood and unify the dry brushing.
- Pick out the nails with Burnt Iron or a dark metail of your choice.
- Mix some Silver RLM01 Metallic into your Burnt Iron and highlight more selectively.
