I painted each of these skeletons in a unique tone, to give each identical sculpt its own identity. These recipes were adapted from some found on Eavy-Archive.com.
Bone 1
- Basecoat with 1:1 Grey Seer and Ushabti Bone .
- Shade with Skeleton Horde . To make it more manageable, I like to thin the paint with Contrast Medium and apply with a long thin brush.
- Further define recesses with a more selective shade of Dryad Bark . I pretty much just use this stage to separate different bones, ribs etc.
- Highlight with a mix of your base colour and some White .
- Finish with selective White highlights.
Bone 2
- Basecoat with 1:1 Karak Stone and White .
- Add some generous shading with some thin Steel Legion Drab . Glaze over add downward facing surfaces and apply as a wash over ribs and areas of high detail.
- Shade with 1:1 Reikland Fleshshade and Seraphim Sepia . To make it more manageable, I like to thin the paint with Contrast Medium and apply with a long thin brush.
- Further define recesses with a more selective shade of Rhinox Hide . I pretty much just use this stage to separate different bones, ribs etc.
- Highlight with a 1:1 mix of Ushabti Bone and White .
- Finish with selective White highlights.
Bone 3
- Basecoat with 1:1 Karak Stone and Ushabti Bone .
- Shade with 1:1 Agrax Earthshade and Skeleton Horde . To make it more manageable, I like to thin the paint with Contrast Medium and apply with a long thin brush.
- Further define recesses with a more selective shade of 1:1 Black and Rhinox Hide . I pretty much just use this stage to separate different bones, ribs etc.
- Highlight with Screaming Skull .
- Finish with selective White highlights.
Bone 4
- Basecoat with 1:1 Rakarth Flesh and Wraithbone .
- Shade with 1:1 Dryad Bark and Baneblade Brown . To make it more manageable, I like to thin the paint heavily with Contrast Medium and apply with a long thin brush.
- Further define recesses with a more selective shade of Dryad Bark . I pretty much just use this stage to separate different bones, ribs etc.
- Glaze highlights over all exposed areas with Ushabti Bone , to add some warmth.
- Highlight with Wraithbone .
- Finish with selective White highlights.
Wood
- Basecoat with Thondia Brown .
- Drybrush exposed areas with a 1:1 mix of Thondia Brown and Steel Legion Drab .
- Shade with Rhinox Hide in recesses and where the wood meets the skeleton.
- With an equal parts mix of Thondia Brown , Steel Legion Drab and Administratum Grey , add fine edge highlights. This is to give the impression of woodgrain, using the drybrushing stage as guidence.
- Increase the amount of Administratum Grey in the mix and more selectively highlight within the previous stage.
- Finish with some very small Administratum Grey highlights.
You may want to underline well defined lines of "woodgrain" with thin lines of Rhinox Hide , to really sell the effect. This is definitely an optional step, but I think it is well worth it.
Blade
- Basecoat with Leadbelcher .
- Wash with Nuln Oil .
- For the shading, I like to apply gome glazes of Wyldwood . Do thin in several passed and add a little Black to the mix in the darkest parts.
- Highlight with Ironbreaker .
- Add edge highlights with Silver RLM01 Metallic .
