My green Apha Legion 30k. Credit to JuanHidalgoMiniatures for the general workflow. Reverse credit to myself for making it extremely complicated. Work in progress!!!
Prep stage:
- Prime Black
- Spray Leadbelcher
- Wash all over with Nuln Oil
- Light all-over drybrush Necron Compound
- Edge drybrush Runefang Steel
- Create feather highlights/transitons with Runefang Steel
- Create shadows / dark transitions with Black Templar
- (Optional) Very quick edge highlight Stormhost Silver
Green Armor
- Wash each panel with 100% strength mix of Akhelian Green and Contrast Medium 1:1. WARNING: Do not put this in your wet palette and do not allow it to separate. Keep it mixed and shake well. Otherwise you'll get blotches.
- (Optional) If you do get blotches and ruin a model - before you strip it, try just drybrushing the whole thing again in Necron Compound then doing another thin layer of the Akhelian Green mixture. It might just save it!
- Tint highlighted areas with Warp Lightning . Note this is VERY strong. Leave shadowy areas blue. Feather with water to create transitions from green-blue.
- (Optional) If needed, come back in with the Akhelian Green mixture and tint any shadows blue which you think need it. Key areas: Under scales, frontside of backpack (behind head), under armpits, leg areas.
Shading and Highlights
- Shade pin shadows with Black or Black Templar
- (Optional) Varnish model. I use one layer of Satin, one thin layer of Matte. But be careful not to go too matte or you'll lose the metal effect.
- (Optional) Go over darkest shadows and pick out rivets with Army Painter: Dark Tone. It has a different finish to the varnished layers and will make layers stand out. It also pools around rivets and into little armor cracks in a really satisfying way.
Steel Trim and Bronze
- Base all silver areas in Gunmetal and all bronze areas in Sycorax Bronze . Wash both with Gryph-charger Grey and highlight Stormhost Silver .
- Base all gold areas Retributor Armour , wash Guilliman Flesh , give it a large highlight of Sycorax Bronze and a pin highlight of Stormhost Silver
The most important step
- Hit all hard edges with chipping, scratches, and an ultra-tin edge highlight of Stormhost Silver . This final step will really brighten the model up and sell the metal effect! Also don't forget the rivets that we hit with wash earlier.
